Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has announced that schools who make best use of the £600 pupil premium could receive a £10,000 reward.

The pupil premium is aimed at helping 1.8m children from poorer backgrounds with things like school meals.

By 2015 the payments will cost a total of £2.5bn a year.

Shadow Education Secretary Stephen Twigg, however, pointed to the fact that the Coalition Government has ‘cut education spending by the biggest amount since the 1950s’ and warned that head teachers will be forced to use the pupil premium to ‘plug holes in their budget’.

Mr Clegg has also outlined further education plans such as summer schools funding and career incentives for teachers to work in disadvantaged areas.
